神道って?仏教って?日本人の宗教観を英語で説明してみよう

日本において代表的な宗教といえば神道と仏教です。
そして、これらの宗教は日常生活の中に自然な形で溶け込み、私たち日本人は双方の影響を受けながら暮らしています。
神道と仏教とは何か、どのような形で日本人がそれらを生活に取り入れているか、そして日本人がキリスト教的行事をも受け入れるほど宗教に対して寛大であることを英語で説明する方法を書いてまいります。

神道とは

神道は日本固有のものですが、誰が築いたものかは分かりませんし、また他宗教のような経典もありません。
神道は多神教のため、祀られている神々は山であったり木であったり、太陽であったり様々です。

Although Shinto is the indigenous religion of Japan, no one knows who founded it.
It has no scriptures like other religions.
As it is polytheistic, various deities such as mountains, trees , or the sun are worshiped in each shrine.

仏教とは

仏教はインドで興り、その後中国・韓国を経て6世紀に日本に伝えられました。
仏教は元々悟りの開き方を教えます。
日本に入ってから神道と混ざりあい、日本の文化や日本人の考え方に影響を与えました。

Bukkyo or Buddhism was founded in India and was introduced to Japan by way of China and Korea in the 6th century.
Buddhism originally teaches the way to enlighten people.
Introduced to Japan, it was mixed with Shinto to influence Japanese culture and the way of thinking of Japanese .

神社とは?

神社とは神道のかみを祀っているところです。
神社の前には鳥居と呼ばれる門があり、この鳥居の内側は神聖であると考えられており、従ってこの門をくぐったっ人は清められているとみなされます。

Jinjya or a Shinto shrine is the place where Japanese kami is enshrined.
There is a gate called torii in front of a Shinto shrine.
The inside of this torii gate is considered to be sacred and those who have gone through this gate are considered to be purified.

寺とは?

寺とは仏教寺院のことであり、大抵複数の仏像が祀られています。
訪れた人々はその仏像に拝みます。また寺の門は鳥居よりもより豪華です。

Tera is a Buddhist temple.
Mostly, plural Buddhist statues are enshrined and people visiting the temple worship those Buddhist statues.
And a gate of a Buddhist temple is more gorgeous than a torii gate.

日本人はどのようなときに神社や寺に行くの?

多くの日本人が神社を訪れるのはお正月の初詣、赤ちゃんのお宮参り、日本式の結婚式などの時であるのに対し、寺を訪れるのは葬儀や法要などです。

Many Japanese visit a Shinto shrine on occasions of New Year’s Day, the first visit of a newborn baby,or Japanese style wedding ceremony while they visit a Buddhist temple in case of someone’s funeral or memorial services.

日本人の宗教は何?

日本人の多くは特定の宗教を信じるのではなく、神社で日本のかみに自らの健康や幸運を願い、また寺でも仏像に同じことを行います。
日本人は神道も仏教も受け入れるのです。そのことは数字が証明してくれます。
神道を信じる人の数と仏教を信じる人の総数は日本の人口を超えると言われています。

Many Japanese do not believe a particular religion but they pray to a Japanese kami for their health and happiness in a Shinto shrine and do the same thing in front of the Buddhist statues in a temple.
Japanese accept both Shinto and Buddhism.
The number proves that.
It is said that the total number of people who believe Shinto and Buddhism is more than the Japanese population.

クリスマスなどのキリスト教行事は?

日本人にとってクリスマスは宗教的行事ではなく、お祭りのような一種のイベントです。
大都市では大きなクリスマスツリーが飾られ、色々なお店の中ではクリスマスソングが聞こえてきます。
また、最近では多くの若者のカップルがキリスト教式の結婚式を行います。

For Japanese ,Christmas is not a religious rites but a kind of an event like a festival.
Large Christmas trees are decorated in big cities and we hear Christmas songs in various shops.
And these days many young couples hold a wedding ceremony in Christian style.
