Obon is one of the Buddhist events.
It is said that departed souls of the ancestors come back to their home and spend three days with their family in July or in August.
Now in many cases it is held from August 13th to 15th adapted to children’s summer vacation or obon vacation of each company.

On the first night of obon, people light the small fire called Mukaebi or light lanterns so that souls wouldn’t lose their way to come back to their home.

Bon-odori is the special dance held after the evening during the bon season.
Originally, it is the dance to console the souls that come back to their family in this world.
The stage for bon-odori is set in the precinct of a temple or a park and the participants dance in a circle, mostly wearing yukata or a light cotton kimono.

Souls of the ancestors that have spent three days with their family are considered to go back to the next world on the fourth day.
People light the fire to see off the souls.
The famous bonfire called “Daimonji-yaki” held on August 16th in Kyoto is one of these events.
In Kyoto, there are five mountains with the designs of letters or pictures and most famous ones are two mountains with the Chinese character”大” called “Daimonji-yama”.
It generally means “great” but in Buddhism it means “universe”.
